100 Dollars

he gave me my first hundred dollar bill.
i barely remember it. i was just a baby.

he gave me constant laughter and taught me how to come up with quick comebacks.

he kept tabs on me while i was in law school.
he waited with me during the release of the bar exam results.
he joined my family in celebrating my success.
he kept pushing me to find a husband so he could be the ninong.
i'm sorry, tito rol. apparently, i kept you waiting too long.

my almost-ninong.
my neighbor.
my surrogate grandfather.
my counselor.
my ATM.
my friend.

we will all miss you.
life is quieter without you.
i hope you find peace.

Song of the Day: Landslide (by Smashing Pumpkins)
So take my love and take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well the landslide will bring you down.

For Rogelio Sarmiento, Sr.
